LibDem Dave Hodgson is the new Mayor of Bedford

Unfortunately, Conservative candidate, Parvez Akhtar, failed in his bid to become Bedford's new mayor. The LibDem Dave Hodgson won the fight after second preference votes were taken into account.

Labour was pushed into a dismal last place. I wonder what Bedford's Labour MP, Patrick Hall thinks of all this? Nadine Dorries says he is not a happy bunny. I imagine he has a face like a bulldog chewing a wasp!

I said a bulldog chewing a wasp. I'm sure you know what I mean. You see this expression when you look at John Prescott.

Congratulations to the new Mayor. I personally think directly elected mayors dilute the impact of party politics and increase direct accountability. I wish Woking could have one !

Maybe we will even get to the stage of more than one candidate from a single party standing ( why not with transferable votes ? ).

Personally I'd vote Labour before I voted Lib Dem - but that's just me.

You wouldn't vote Labour rather than LibDem if you lived in Hull. Labour wrecked the city and Hull has been revealed as the best unitary authority for saving taxpayers' money. The council's LibDem leader has also been very open and friendly to me when I put my TPA hat on.

I would like referendums all over the country asking the voters if they would like a directly elected mayor in their area. I would lead the charge in favour in Hull. I think this is the way to go. The successful candidate has a clear manifesto and basically says back me or sack me in four years. Much better than the current system where there is little accountability when you really get down to the detail.
